John Easterwood honored with emeritus status
John Easterwood, associate professor of finance in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of associate professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.
A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 33 years, Easterwood made significant contributions to the study of corporate finance, fixed income securities, and investments.
He has published over 20 articles in various academic and practitioner journals such as Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal Corporate Finance, Financial Management, Journal of Banking and Finance, Strategic Management Journal, and Journal of Finance.
In addition, he led the finance department’s search efforts for recruiting tenure-track faculty and the college’s undergraduate scholarship and awards committee for 15 years.
Easterwood taught hundreds of students every year, collaborated with colleagues and doctoral students on research, and effectively led the department as acting department head. In the classroom, he taught a wide variety of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral level courses covering topics of corporate finance, fixed-income securities, financial analytics, and banking.
During his career, Easterwood served as director of the department’s doctoral program and supervised several doctoral dissertations. He also was recognized with a Pamplin College of Business Certificate of Teaching Excellence for his commitment to student learning.
Easterwood received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Alabama and a doctoral degree in finance from the University of Texas.
