Winter weather to affect Virginia Tech campus operations

The Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Blackstone will be closed today, Dec. 9.

Dec. 8

6:08 p.m.

Delays for Tuesday, Dec. 9, are:

• The Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Blackstone will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
• The Tidewater Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Suffolk will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
• The Virginia Tech Roanoke Center and Health Sciences and Technology Campus in Roanoke will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
• The Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Virginia Beach will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

12:07 p.m. 

The Eastern Shore Agricultural and Research Extension Center in Painter will close at 1 p.m. today.

11:08 a.m.

The Southern Piedmont Agricultural and Research Extension Center in Blackstone will close at 1 p.m. today.

8:56 a.m.

Community practice and specialty services at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Blacksburg and the Animal Cancer Care and Research Center in Roanoke are closed today. Clients with affected appointments will be contacted with further instructions. Emergency services remain open.

7:50 a.m.

Adjusted hours for dining centers:

• Perry Place, Ducky's, Viva, and Viva Too are closed.
• Turner Place: Dolci, Bruegger's, and Firegrill will be open until 10 a.m for breakfast. 
• Squires Food Court is open while Squires Student Center is closed.
• All remaining locations will operate as normal.

Adjusted hours for Recreational Sports:

• McComas Gym remains open with normal hours. This will continue to be evaluated as the day goes on and weather progresses. 
• War Memorial Gym is closing at 8 a.m. 
• Venture Out Center and the golf course are closed. 
• All group exercise and intramural sports are canceled for the day. 

6:11 a.m. 

All Blacksburg campus in-person classes and activities are canceled Monday, Dec. 8. Online courses will be held as scheduled. In-person classes affected by the closure are canceled and should not be moved online.

University staff designated "emergency personnel" must report as instructed by their supervisor. Employees with a remote or hybrid work schedule should work online as scheduled. In-person employees should not report.

Dec. 7

9:45 p.m.

The Virginia Tech Roanoke Center and Health Sciences and Technology Campus in Roanoke will be closed on Monday, Dec. 8. All in-person classes and activities are canceled.

4:34 p.m. 

In anticipation of potential wintry weather, Virginia Tech has put snow emergency routes on the Blacksburg campus in effect starting at 10 p.m. today.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Blacksburg and Roanoke areas effective from 1 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, to 1 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9.

This designation goes into effect prior to road conditions deteriorating to support snow removal and emergency vehicle movement.
