Jim Hillman named chief of staff for Division of Finance
Jim Hillman has been named chief of staff for the Division of Finance, effective Nov. 10.
In his new role, Hillman will work with Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer Simon Allen and division leadership to provide operational excellence and programmatic oversight of enterprise-level strategic planning, divisionwide program implementation, performance metrics and reporting, business operations, policy development and compliance, and organizational effectiveness.
“Jim’s acumen for strategic leadership, effective collaboration, and data-informed decision-making make him an invaluable addition to the finance division,” said Allen. “Those qualities, coupled with Jim’s deep understanding of university operations, will enable us to better serve the university and enhance our capacity to support strategic initiatives and priorities with agility, responsiveness, and efficiency.”
Most recently, Hillman served as senior director of finance and business analytics in the Division of Auxiliary and Business Services. In that role, he led programmatic activities around budget development and administration, data analysis, financial reporting, business planning and development, and the division’s overall operations.
Hillman first joined Virginia Tech in 2009 and has worked closely with the finance division in financial and administrative roles spanning university operations. He previously worked in the Office of Budget and Financial Planning and also with teams from sponsored programs, facilities, and public safety.
"I am honored to step into this role and work alongside a team dedicated to responsible and transparent management of Virginia Tech’s financial resources,” said Hillman. "I’ve seen the division’s strong commitment to service and collaboration, and I look forward to building on that foundation with colleagues across the university.”
Hillman holds an MBA from Radford University and a bachelor’s degree in finance and human resource management from Virginia Tech, where he also earned a graduate certificate in public and nonprofit financial management.
