Michael R. Wright, a valued member of the Virginia Tech Student Affairs community, passed away on Oct. 18. He was 64. Wright was widely respected for his steady presence, kindness, and the care he showed colleagues and students alike.

Wright’s career combined long-term public service and hands-on work that prioritized people and community. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a devoted family man who treasured time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family. Outside of work he was active as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Pearisburg, bringing the same warmth and humor to volunteer and faith communities that he did to campus.

Colleagues remember Wright for his ability to make every workplace feel like family. He was known for a quick smile, ready joke, and a steady willingness to support others. Those qualities helped him build strong relationships across departments and with students.
