Cadets honored with flag detail at California game
First-year Cadets Sonja Dexter, Brandon Burrows, and Claire Abele received the flags at Friday’s football game against California.
The passing of the flags during the pre-game ceremonies was a continuation of the proud partnership between the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and Virginia Tech football to highlight the colors at every football game.
Three football players, chosen because of their performance in the last game or at practice, carried the American flag, the state flag, and the team’s spirit flag and led the team onto the field. They delivered the flags to cadets at the south end of the field.
The cadets, also selected based on their performance in the corps, rendered honors to the flags and carried them off the field. For home games, three first-year cadets are selected, and one or two upper-class cadets travel with the team and receive the flags at away games.
Dexter, from Springfield, Virginia, is in Air Force ROTC and majoring in national security and foreign affairs in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. A member of Golf Company, she has risen as a leader amongst first-year cadets, sharing her motivation and positive attitude with those around her. Dexter recently took charge of the homecoming banner project within her company, which took first place in the regiment.
Burrows is a Marine-option midshipman in Naval ROTC and is majoring in general engineering in the College of Engineering. From Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, he betters those around him and lifts up other cadets. A member of Hotel Company, Burrows has shown initiative creating physical training events and is known as a dependable team player willing to put others’ needs before his own.
Abele, from McLean, Virginia, is a member of Air Force ROTC and is majoring in computational modeling and data analytics in the College of Science. She seeks out challenges and works hard to be the best version of herself. She has attention to detail, quick action, and consistently high performance daily as a member of Foxtrot Company.
