How should an organization prepare for change?  Everyone encounters this challenge, whether the change is intentional or unpredicted.

Virginia Tech’s Organizational Excellence team partners with leaders across campus to work through the needs and opportunities that come when changes occur – from adopting new business processes to changing the campus culture.

What is Organizational Excellence?

With decades of collective experience managing organizational change, Organizational Excellence serves as a no-cost internal consulting partner to help the university achieve the greatest strategic impact with new projects and initiatives.

Support will look different depending on the needs of the initiative. It can be large projects that need guidance over multiple months, ongoing efforts that only need Organizational Excellence as an occasional sounding board, or somewhere in between.

Change at work

In 2023, Virginia Tech had assembled the Sexual Violence Prevention (SVPI) Initiative to advance the university's framework for sustainable climate and cultural transformation that establishes sexual violence prevention as a shared responsibility of the entire university community.

To help the group enact cultural change of this magnitude, Amy Hogan ’95, executive director for Organizational Excellence, was brought on board. From advising, to project tracking, and mediating, Hogan was with them every step of the way to produce the final SVPI Strategic Plan at the end of the academic year.

“Collaborating with Amy and the Organizational Excellence team was essential to the success of SVPI and the completion of our strategic plan. She provided invaluable leadership, offering strategic insights to help the group stay focused on our objectives.” says Meghan Kuhn, director at VT Engage and program director for SVPI.

In the last few years, Hogan and her team have provided support across the university, this includes working with:

  • Advancement leadership to refine appreciative visioning for the future and develop strategic priority areas for planning to meet bold ten-year goals
  • Students with Disabilities to provide recommendations on near-term and long-term priorities and initiatives, including analysis of their structure, processes, and stakeholder needs
  • Human Resources in streamlining processes for employment verification
  • The Office of Sponsored Programs to evaluate opportunities for enhanced operations and service delivery
  • The Department of Campus Planning, Infrastructure, and Facilities to better understand current organizational strategies around space planning and management
