Virginia Tech 13th among U.S. public schools in new ranking
Virginia Tech ranked No. 13 among all U.S. public schools in the 2026 Wall Street Journal/College Pulse ranking of U.S. colleges released Oct. 2.
Overall, Virginia Tech landed at No. 35 among the 580 universities included in the rankings that focus on two key metrics: how much a school improves students’ chances of graduating and their future earnings and the overall student experience, according to the Wall Street Journal.
"Virginia Tech continues to be an institution of choice among the nation’s leading public universities as a result of our commitment to engaged and experiential learning and student-centered faculty and staff," said Executive Vice President and Provost Cyril Clarke. "Our graduates not only earn highly valued degrees, but also develop the confidence, skills, and perspectives that position them to lead and thrive in competitive, rapidly evolving fields.”
Hands-on experiences, including internships, study abroad, and undergraduate research — are central to a Virginia Tech education across every college. These opportunities prepare students for their careers while sharpening their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. A powerful global Hokie alumni network further supports students and graduates as they build their paths forward
Key support now comes from Virginia Tech Advantage, the university’s commitment to remove barriers for students’ success and ensure that they have access to those real-world experiences.
“This recognition highlights the enduring strength of a Virginia Tech education,” said Senior Vice President for Advancement Tom Wamsley. “Through opportunities made possible by Virginia Tech Advantage and the support of our global Hokie alumni community, students are empowered to pursue life-changing experiences that prepare them for professional success and meaningful impact in their communities.”
Virginia Tech ranked fifth among public land-grant universities, according to the Wall Street Journal list.
