Handwritten gratitude: Beyond Boundaries Scholars say “thank you” at letter writing event

More than 100 Virginia Tech students gathered in Owens Hall on Tuesday, Sept. 30, for the annual Beyond Boundaries Scholars letter writing event – an evening filled with gratitude, connection, and heartfelt reflection.
Throughout the evening, students took time to write personal notes to those whose generosity has shaped their Virginia Tech experience through supporting the Beyond Boundaries Scholars program. More than 220 letters were collected, including those from students who were unable to attend in person but did not want to miss their chance to say “thank you.”
Since 2016, the Beyond Boundaries Scholars program has supported more than 730 high-achieving students at Virginia Tech by removing financial barriers. Events like this bring those scholars together not only to celebrate their accomplishments, but to recognize the larger story they are a part of – a legacy of philanthropy, hope, and possibility.
“This event reminds us we are all a part of something bigger,” said Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Juan Espinoza ’04. “These students are here because someone believes in them, and writing these letters is one way for them to say thank-you.”
In-between writing, students exchanged stories, made new friends, enjoyed refreshments, and even joined in on a giveaway. Staff were there to share the rich history of philanthropy at Virginia Tech, and help students see how they are an integral part of that legacy.
The evening served as both a celebration of student achievement and a powerful reminder that every gift – and every thank-you - strengthens the Hokie community.
