Russell A. Green, professor of geotechnical engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been awarded the Charles E. Via Jr. Professorship by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The Charles E. Via Jr. Professorship in Civil and Environmental Engineering is funded through the endowment established in 1987 by Marion Bradley Via and subsequently supplemented by the Via-Bradley College of Engineering Foundation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 17 years, Green is recognized as one of the world’s experts in earthquake engineering and seismic hazard analysis.

Green is widely published, with more than 191 refereed papers and a significant number of technical reports. He has participated in over $8 million in funded research with a personal share of $3.5 million.

Recognized as a dedicated classroom instructor and research advisor, Green was awarded the College of Engineering Certificate of Teaching Excellence in 2013 and 2019 and the Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Teaching Award in 2018.

Throughout his career, Green has served as a mentor and advisor for numerous undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral research associates, helping them develop successful careers in both academia and industry. He also serves as graduate admissions coordinator for the Geotechnical Engineering Program.

Green received his bachelor’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, his master’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. Complementary to his academic pursuits, he served as a U.S. Marine from 1984-88, on the technical staff of the U.S. Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board, and as a visiting research engineer at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center.
