Stanley B. Grant appointed Nick Prillaman Professor
Stanley B. Grant, a professor of civil and environmental engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the Nick Prillaman Professorship by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The Nick Prillaman Professorship was established in 1986 with a generous gift from Nick Prillaman Jr.
A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than seven years, Grant is recognized as an expert in environmental engineering, water quality, and sustainable drinking water systems.
Since 2022, Grant has served as the director of the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory. The Occoquan Reservoir is a critical asset, serving as the drinking water source for over a million people in Northern Virginia and requiring multi-stakeholder expertise to maintain a high level of water quality. Currently, Grant is leading a research initiative to identify and mitigate contimnation from PFAS, a group of long lasting chemicals, in the reservoir, to protect drinking water for nearly a million residents while creating a replicable “one water” model for managing PFAS nationwide.
Grant has over 100 peer-reviewed research articles published in high-impact journals, including Science and Nature. His papers have been cited in over 6,600 publications and his h-index is 43. He has led over $18 million in competitive state, private, and federal research projects.
In the classroom, Grant teaches fundamental topics related to the fate and transport of pollutants in the environment. He has received multiple teaching and research awards, as well as honorary international lectureships, and has mentored and advised numerous students and postdoctoral research associates
Grant received his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology.
