Niyousha Hosseinichimeh, associate professor of industrial and systems engineering in the College of Engineering, has been named to a Grado Early Career Faculty Fellowship in Industrial and Systems Engineering by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors. 

The Grado Faculty Fellowships were established in 2022 by the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and are supported by the John Grado Industrial and Systems Engineering Excellence Fund endowment. These faculty fellowships enable the department to retain and attract outstanding faculty, contributing to the scholarly and research productivity of faculty in the department as well as to the department’s external reputation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 11 years, Hosseinichimeh has made significant research contributions to developing and applying methods to improve health and health care systems, using simulation models to help stakeholders improve their understanding of complex dynamic systems. Her methodological contributions include expanding calibration methods for dynamic models and developing techniques for group model building in the field of system dynamics.

Hosseinichimeh has published 30 refereed journal papers and 18 conference papers. Her work has been cited 1,236 times, and she has co-authored papers with over 70 students. She is a managing editor for Systems Dynamics Review, and she was the health thread chair for the International Systems Dynamics Conference for three years, managing over 80 papers.

Hosseinichimeh has secured more than $6.28 million in external research funding, with a personal share of $1.52 million across seven external research projects. Her work has been funded by many federal agencies including the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, U.S. Geological Survey, National Institutes of Health, and National Science Foundation as well as the Burroughs Wellcome Fund foundation and industry partner Dateline.

She has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses and developed a new graduate course in health care systems engineering.

Throughout her career, Hosseinichimeh has served as a mentor and advisor for many undergraduate and graduate students and has advised more than five Ph.D. students. Her doctoral students have secured positions in academia, government, and industry. Hosseinichimeh has advised undergraduate researchers and capstone senior design teams, resulting in her students receiving internal and external recognition. 

Hosseinichimeh received her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Sharif University of Technology and her master’s and doctoral degrees in public policy from the State University of New York at Albany. She completed postdoctoral work in industrial and systems engineering at Virginia Tech.
