On June 11, 2025, the Virginia Tech Police Department received a report that a van stopped in the roadway on West Campus Drive and began soliciting a juvenile to get in the van. The juvenile declined and the driver of the van continued to solicit the juvenile using an intimidating voice while unlocking the doors. The juvenile ran away from the scene at this point. This offense happened just before 7 p.m. The suspect vehicle is described as a newer model white passenger van being driven by a white male in his 40s. The suspect vehicle left the scene and has not been located.
 
The incident is believed to have occurred near 175 West Campus Drive and is being investigated by the Virginia Tech Police. This incident is being investigated as an attempted abduction.
 
This information is being released in accordance with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. The Clery Act requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about reported crimes on and near their respective campuses, including timely warnings of crimes that may represent a threat to the safety of students, employees or visitors.

Personal Safety and Protection

  • When possible, avoid walking alone. Walk with a friend or walk in well‐traveled and well–lit areas.
  • Avoid places where you are vulnerable and there are no exits. 
  • Be aware of people around you. When you are walking, stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings. 
  • Walk with confidence; show that you are aware and in control. 
  • If you are being followed, go to the nearest business or residence for help. 
  • If you are harassed by the occupants of a car, turn and walk in the other direction. The driver will have to turn around to follow you.
  • If you feel you are in danger, call 911 to request assistance.  The Virginia Tech campus has 129 Blue Light Phones around campus if your cell phone is not working.
