Stephanie Brown has been named assistant vice president for administration for the Division of Human Resources.

Brown had been serving as the interim assistant vice president since July 2024 and stepped into the permanent role in April.

Brown leads a number of human resources administrative functions, including benefits, employee administration, employee programs, leave, policy and compliance, and retirement. Also with this role, she assumed leadership of the HR Service Center and human resources’ finance and operations team.

Among her goals in the assistant vice president role, Brown is focused on enhancing customer service and providing employees the best possible experience through process improvement and leading the service center in a customer-focused pilot called “Ask HR.”

Brown joined Virginia Tech in August 2018 as one of the university’s division directors, a cohort of human resources leaders that are embedded in colleges and university departments. Brown was promoted to senior division director in 2023. From 2018-24, Brown served the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and was part of the dean’s leadership team.

“We are thrilled to have Stephanie serve Virginia Tech in this new role and as part of the Division of Human Resources senior leadership team,” said Bryan Garey, vice president for human resources. “In this role, Stephanie is drawing on her previous experiences as a strategic planner and embedded HR director to ensure high service levels and provide a more streamlined, efficient set of processes for our campus community.”

Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Brown served as human resources director for APL America LLC, which is part of the CMA CGM Group and is one of the world’s leading global shipping service providers with more than 4,900 employees. Prior to APL, she served as a human resources manager for Hella Corporate Center, a manufacturer of automotive lighting and electronics components and systems with 30,000 employees.

Brown holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in human resources and organizational development from Eastern Michigan University.
