James W. Schmidley, a former professor of neurology at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who have been specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 14 years, Schmidley served on the medical school's admissions and clinical clerkship oversight committees. He also was the neurology medical student clerkship director and electives director and a member of the department of internal medicine committee on appointments, promotion, and tenure. 

Schmidley served as director of the Carilion Clinic stroke program, mentored more than 200 medical students and residents, and was recognized through awards for outstanding teaching by the Virginia Tech Center for Excellence in Teaching, the Departments of Neurology at the University of Arkansas and Virginia Tech, and the American Academy of Neurology award. 

Schmidley authored more than 75 peer reviewed researceh articles and book chapters and contributed to 24 funded grants as well as many scholarly abstracts, invited lectures, and meeting presentations. He served in numerous state, regional, national, and international organizations, including the American Neurological Association, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Heart Association’s Stroke Council, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the UK Medical Research Council, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the National Institutes of Health. 

Schmidley received his medical degree from the University of Virginia, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He is certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
