Ut Prosim in Action: Honoring JMahl Stewart, a Virginia Tech Culture Champion

Virginia Tech is celebrating the impact of JMahl Stewart, a beloved Culture Champion in the university's Peer to Peer Onboarding Program who passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 10.
As a volunteer Culture Champion since the program launched in 2022, Stewart helped newly hired A/P faculty navigate campus resources, shared institutional knowledge, and fostered their sense of belonging in the Hokie community.
“My first professional introduction to Virginia Tech was through JMahl,” said Sarah Smiley, associate director of partnerships and innovation in the College of Science. "He approached every interaction with contagious enthusiasm that immediately made me feel valued."
Stewart served as the senior strategic talent acquisition and recruitment manager in Advancement since 2014, bringing over 25 years of HR experience to the role.
Colleagues say his approach to mentorship perfectly embodied Virginia Tech's motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve). Through his genuine respect for diverse perspectives and commitment to making everyone feel valued, Stewart put Virginia Tech's Principles of Community into action in meaningful, tangible ways.
“He went beyond professional guidance,” Smiley added. "He took time to discover shared interests like international travel and science fiction."
Gia Ha, wellness coordinator in the Office for Inclusive Strategy and Excellence, shared similar experiences. “JMahl's bright spirit and warmth made him an extraordinary mentor. I'll always remember JMahl's welcoming smile and the genuine interest he took in helping me find my place at Virginia Tech. His dedication for helping others will forever be a part of my memory of him.”
Peer to Peer Onboarding pairs experienced employees with newcomers, creating connections that strengthen the university community. Stewart's gift for making people feel instantly welcomed and valued, perfectly embodying the program's mission and his university legacy of service and mentorship.
