You know you’ll need a resume for interviews, but what about LinkedIn? Should you have a profile on this social media platform?

“You should,” said Becca Scott, director of professional development and experiential initiatives. “As a student or recent graduate at Virginia Tech, you’ll find plenty of job search resources at Career and Professional Development. And don’t be intimidated by LinkedIn. We can help.”

For your LinkedIn profile photo, check out Career and Professional Development’s Iris professional photo booth, a free professional photo service for students, available by appointment between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

"Iris is intuitive, convenient, and easily accessible," Scott said. "In as little as 15 minutes, it can take three rounds of photos with professional lighting. The whole process is self-service – with clear and simple prompts throughout the process – and Iris is wheelchair accessible."

Don’t think you captured your best side? While you’re in the photo both, you will have the option of retaking the photos and editing them as needed – think teeth whitening, blemish removal, skin softening. After you’ve taken the photos, Iris emails them to you and gives you another chance to touch them up, change your background, and adjust as you like.

Once you’ve selected your  photo, simply upload it to your LinkedIn profile. It’s well into career fair season at Virginia Tech, and if you’d like to learn more, Career and Professional Development hosts and offers comprehensive information on career fairs so you can plan your attendance at events that interest you.

If you still have questions about using Iris or setting up your resume or LinkedIn profile, contact the staff at Career and Professional Development. Appointments can be made on Handshake or by calling 540-231-6241. Advising appointments are available in person, by Zoom, and by phone any time between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. whenever the university is in session. Career and Professional Development is located in Smith Career Center on the Blacksburg campus.
