Harry Dorn honored with emeritus status

Harry Dorn, professor of chemistry in the College of Science at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.
A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 50 years, Dorn’s early work led to developments and applications in nuclear magnetic resonance, dynamic nuclear polarization, and magnetic resonance imaging. Dorn’s later work made significant contributions on new fullerenes, fuller tubes, metallofullerenes, and nanoparticles in the areas of chemistry, spectroscopy, and medicine.
In addition, he served as an educator of science, emphasizing the importance of introducing science and nanoscience to K-12 students and the public at elementary schools, high schools, science fairs, and science museums.
Dorn conducted outreach and educational programs with elementary, high school, and college students as well as scientific presentations extensively throughout the United States, Europe, China, and Japan to advance the understanding of chemistry and related science topics. In the classroom, he taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of chemistry, nanoscience, and medicine.
Throughout his career, Dorn served as a mentor and advisor for numerous undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral research associates and helped them develop successful careers in both academia and industry.
Dorn received his bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of California.
