Virginia Tech first-year applications approach 58,000, another record high

Virginia Tech set another new high for the number of first-year applications for admissions.
A record 57,622 first-year applications were submitted for fall 2025 admission — 10.2 percent more than a year ago. This year marks the fifth straight year in which the university has set a new high for the number of first-year applications for admissions.
“Virginia Tech continues to see record high applications year after year due to a successful recruitment strategy supported by colleges and other units from across the university,” said Juan Espinoza, vice provost for enrollment management. “We utilize a data informed approach that maximizes our ability to connect with a wide variety of students.”
The applicant pool includes 21,849 in-state applicants, 30,082 out-of-state applicants, and 5,691 international applicants. The in-state applicant pool increased by 6.1 percent, while the out-of-state and international pool increased by 12.9 and 13.2 percent, respectively.
In addition, Virginia Tech saw a 16.6 percent increase in first-generation applications and a 15.7 percent increase in applications to the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets.
“Because of strong efforts between the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the Corps of Cadets, the increase in cadet applications further supports our goal to enroll 1,400 cadets,” said Kayla Nichols, associate vice provost for enrollment management and director of undergraduate admissions. “The increase in first-generation college student applications affirms that Virginia Tech is viewed as an institution for all students.”
The target for next fall’s first-year class is 7,085 students — in line with 2023 and 2024 first-year enrollments.
Admission decisions for those who applied for early action will be announced by late February. Regular decision applicants will be notified by mid-March.
Applicants accepted to Virginia Tech have until May 1 to respond. Students seeking to transfer to Virginia Tech for the summer or fall sessions will have until March 1 to apply. For more dates and deadlines, visit the Admissions section on vt.edu.
