Welcome Back Bash
Scholarship Celebration
CNRE brought together scholarship recipients and donors for a special celbration in September. Benefactors got to meet the young people being aided by their generosity.
The students learned of the motivations and remembrances that led to the creation of the scholarships. The meetings provided donors with assurance their dollars are well-placed, and recipients with the meaning behind the gifts.
Homecoming
Harvest Hikes
The autumn leaves are lovely to see, but there’s so much more to fall in the Appalachians. Each fall CNRE faculty lead a series of Harvest Hikes on campus and in the Blacksburg area to provide information about the flora, the landforms, and the sights available from nearby trails.
Research Scientist John Peterson led a group on a three-mile walk around campus, pointing out a multitude of tree species and how they work within the aesthetics of the grounds.
Forestry Professor John Seiler, aka Dr. Dendro, led a group around Pandapas Pond, just north of town in the Jefferson National Forest, looking at how leaves of different species turned different colors.
Geography Instructor Stewart Scales led a hike to Bald Knob and the Mountain Lake Conservancy in Giles County, looking at the geology of the rock formations, the high-altitude flora, and the views of the New River Valley from the overlooks on the trails.
