Ilja A. Luciak honored with emeritus status
Ilja A. Luciak, professor of political science in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.
A member of the Virginia Tech community for 35 years, Luciak made significant contributions through work with DIAKONIA-Sweden, the European Commission, the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development, and the Wenner-Gren Foundation, where he brought international visibility to Virginia Tech.
In addition, he served as principal investigator on grants researching gender and politics, civil war, and post-conflict peacemaking in Central and Latin America.
In the classroom, Luciak taught and lectured a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of political science. He has authored or co-authored over 40 refereed journal articles, books, book chapters, and reviews.
Throughout his career, Luciak directed numerous master’s and doctoral students in the college's programs. He also provided many years of distinguished service to the Department of Political Science, including his role as chair from 2002-10, as well as to the college and the university through dedicated service on numerous committees and task forces.
Luciak received his master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He completed his law degree and postgraduate law work at Universität Wien, Austria.
