Steven Lee appointed executive director for Network Infrastructure and Services
Virginia Tech alumni and longtime network services employee Steven Lee has been appointed to serve as the new executive director for Network Infrastructure and Services within the Division of Information Technology.
Lee brings more than 20 years of experience in IT and operations. Lee succeeds outgoing executive director William Dougherty, who retired in July.
Lee's career has been marked by significant contributions to Virginia Tech’s Network Infrastructure and Services team and to the university. As senior director of operations, Lee oversaw a team of more than 40 members and was responsible for the design, delivery, operation, and support of critical enterprise services. These included local and wide area networks, Wi-Fi, virtual private network services, and telephony, among others. Lee’s leadership has ensured that these services align with Virginia Tech’s mission and strategic priorities, enhancing both operational efficiency and the user experience.
“Virginia Tech has a decades-long track record of national and international leadership in advanced networking and technology infrastructure deployment. As such, it is not surprising that after a nationwide search, our top candidate hailed from right here in Blacksburg,” said Sharon P. Pitt, vice president for information technology and chief information officer. “In this time of rapidly evolving technology needs and capabilities, leaders with experience at our university can help to chart a steady path forward. I’m delighted that Steve Lee will be joining our leadership team.”
Among Lee’s achievements is the launch of the new open Wi-Fi network at Virginia Tech, VT Open WiFi, which streamlines access to online resources and improves both the student and the visitor experience. Lee also led the deployment of a proof-of-concept private cellular network for research purposes on the Blacksburg campus in collaboration with multiple stakeholders.
Lee holds and MBA and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with a minor in economics from Virginia Tech.
“I am honored and excited to continue serving Virginia Tech in this new role. Throughout my career, it has been a privilege to work alongside many highly skilled and dedicated professionals who are committed to delivering robust, high-performance telecommunications services," said Lee. "I look forward to leading the advancement of the technology services needed to support Virginia Tech during this dynamic time of growth and innovation.”
Lee will begin his new role on Aug. 25.
