Tom Brandon, professor of civil and environmental engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 39 years, Brandon’s scholarship focused on geotechnical engineering. In the classroom, he taught both undergraduate- and graduate-level courses, and he advised numerous graduate students through their research work.

Through his leadership as director and his technical expertise, Brandon contributed to the establishment of the W.C. English Geotechnical Research Laboratory. He also helped develop the Center for Geotechnical Practice and Research as a successful industry affiliates program.

Brandon was a member of the Interagency Performance Evaluation Taskforce, which investigated the failure of the flood control system in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Clemson University and his master’s degree and Ph.D. from University of California at Berkeley.
