When did you join the veterinary college?
August 2023

The best part of being a faculty is?
The opportunity to be part of a student's journey. I love getting to know students and see them accomplish their goals. Each student's journey looks different, and that's OK! Seeing students grow in confidence and resiliency and knowing that I had a small part in that is one of my favorite parts of my job.

Best advice I've gotten...
Don't take things personally. It's easy to do when you are emotionally invested in people, but sometimes you need to take a step back to stay centered. Also, don't apologize for being yourself- you are uniquely you, quirks and all.

How would you capture the essence of your work in a newspaper headline?
Climb every mountain, but don't do it alone!

My hidden talent...
I can (usually) figure out the end of a movie or show before it's over. I'm not sure if this is a talent, or more of an annoyance to those watching with me!

Words of encouragement to a current veterinary college student...
Where to start? Here it goes: Strive for progress, not perfection. Growth is not linear, and it doesn't happen overnight. Give yourself grace. Embrace the journey -- the ups and downs! Don't be afraid to ask for help. Don't compare yourself to others. Be willing to try new strategies. Take care of your whole self and don't wait until you feel burned out to make a self-care plan. Have FUN!

A person who has inspired me...
My mom. She is a woman in the medical field, which isn't easy, and is respected by all who work with her for her knowledge and expertise. She also became a single mom after my dad died, and parenting two teenagers by herself could not have been easy. She has shown me what a strong, independent woman can do -- anything!

One misconception that all students seem to have is?
One rough exam is the end of your veterinary career-- it's not! Use it as an opportunity to evaluate what you are currently doing. There are so many factors that can impact your academic health, and it really is important to have supports in place for those things. Don't wait to seek help and support- that is what I'm here for! My office is a judgment-free zone, and I can help come up with a plan and resources to support you.

If I had a superpower, it would be...
Bouncing back! I don't stay down, and I encourage students not to, either. Life will test you constantly, and some seasons are harder than others. Remember that nothing lasts forever, and I try to come out stronger and with more knowledge than I had before!

This excites me the most about the future of my industry...
The concept of student success in higher education has come a long way. We acknowledge that student success is a holistic concept that will depend on each student and their definition of success. We also know that academic success is interconnected with mental health, physical health, belongingness, and support networks. I'm excited to see how higher education continues to find creative ways to meet student needs and make college more accessible for all students.

A cause I'm most passionate about...
Supporting and destigmatizing the importance of mental health. While this has come a long way, there is still a lot of shame associated with seeking mental health resources and it can feel like an admission of failure. It's actually quite the opposite! The most successful people are the ones who realize they need to ask for help.

Favorite way to end the day...
Hanging out with my family, reading, or watching a show (currently Grey's Anatomy)! I also really enjoy being creative, whether designing art or decorating.

Top of my bucket list...
Go to Ireland. I've wanted to visit since I was little!

My favorite quote...
Maya Angelou- “You alone are enough. You have nothing to prove to anybody.”

How many pets/animals live at home? Can you tell us about them?
I have 2 dogs, both adopted pit bull mixes- Sully and Minnie. Sully is a goofy boy who loves to chase the hose, play tug of war, and snuggle with me. Minnie is a calm, sweet girl who is very protective of her family and has such a desire to please.

Anything else to add?
I'm married to a wonderful and very supportive partner, and this year we'll have our 17th wedding anniversary. I also have two spunky boys, who make me burst with love and pride and keep me on my toes constantly! I wouldn't change any of them for the world!
