Arthur Keown, professor of finance in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community for 49 years, Keown designed and taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses ranging across the finance curriculum, placing strong emphasis on program development and academic support for student athletes, financial wellness, and literacy for all students. He taught approximately 1,300 to 1,500 students each year.

In his career, Keown earned several teaching awards including the 1982 William E. Wine Award, the 1995 Alumni Award for Teaching Excellence, the 1999 State Council for Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award, the 2015 Pylon Honor Award, was named Alumni Distinguished Professor in 2016, and was chosen by the students to be the Class Sponsor for the Class of 2021.

Keown’s scholarship has been published in the top journals of his field, including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. He wrote six college textbooks over the course of his career.

In addition, Keown has served as co-executive editor for the Journal of Financial Research, co-editor of the Financial Management Association Survey and Synthesis Series, as well as serving on the board of directors of the Financial Management Association.

At Virginia Tech, he has served as the head of the Department of Finance, Insurance, and Business Law and as chair of the Virginia Tech Services board of directors for more than 20 years. He also developed a financial literacy program for all Virginia Tech students, in addition to serving as a member of the President’s Council.

Keown received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, an MBA from the University of Michigan, and his doctorate from Indiana University.
