Scott England, associate professor of aerospace and ocean engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been named the Crofton Faculty Fellow by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The Kevin Crofton Professorial Endowment in Aerospace and Ocean Engineering was established with a gift from alumnus Kevin Crofton. The endowment supports the work of faculty in the Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering, including support for tenured professors, faculty fellowships, and the retention of top-performing faculty members. England will serve as the Crofton Faculty Fellow for a five-year term.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 2016, England has brought innovative teaching methods and new course content to integrate space plasma physics with traditional aerospace engineering curricula which has impacted many aerospace and ocean engineering students. He has received two college awards for excellence in teaching and has been instrumental in guiding and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students seeking careers in space science and exploration.

England’s research in upper atmosphere remote sensing and interaction dynamics modeling has improved our understanding of the low Earth orbit space environment. He has contributed to the growth of the Virginia Tech Center for Space Science and Engineering Research, a collaboration among multiple College of Engineering departments.

His scholarship has more than 4,700 citations and serves the National Academy of Science, NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the American Geophysical Union.

England received his master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Leicester.
