Student support and success departments in the College of Natural Resources and Environment and Undergraduate Academic Affairs are being recognized by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, in partnership with the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, with the 2023 University Exemplary Department or Program Award.

The Advising Center in the College of Natural Resources and Environment and the Hokie Transfer Community in Undergraduate Academic Affairs’ Academic Advising Initiatives unit earned the award for developing and implementing creative solutions to supporting transfer students, both those transferring into Virginia Tech and into new majors.

In 2015, the Advising Center started as a team of five individuals who were committed to support all students interested or enrolled in the college. Over the last nine years, the center has grown to include an associate dean, two advising administrators, two recruiters, four advisors, and two support staff, all dedicated to the success of students through an intentional effort to collaborate across areas to provide students with a remarkable transition. The center offers invaluable support and resources to students who express interest in transferring from another institution.

The Advising Center has created exemplary teaching and learning environments for students and is steadfastly committed to excellence in recruitment and advising practices. The center’s proactive approach, personalized guidance, and collaborative efforts contribute significantly to student success.

Virginia Tech’s Hokie Transfer Community consists of programs that provide transfer students with holistic support, helping them develop connections with other Hokie transfers, opportunities to get involved with the university community, and acclimation to the campus. Since 2018, the community's multifaceted collaborative support has been established from almost every corner of the campus to include Undergraduate Admissions, academic colleges, New Student and Family Programs, Registrar’s Office, Career and Professional Development, Housing Services, and Living-Learning Programs.

The Hokie Transfer Community provides ongoing support for transfer students by reducing barriers in the transition process. A dedicated staff has positively impacted the campus community’s perspective of transfer students, which has resulted in tremendous growth in the campuswide support and resources provided to Virginia Tech’s transfer student population.

Presented annually since 1994, the University Exemplary Department or Program Award was developed as a part of Virginia Tech's Faculty Rewards Project, which sought to clarify the expectations of faculty and define appropriate rewards for their accomplishments. To be eligible, the nominated department or program must have teaching and learning as a primary purpose and identify as a “department” or “program.”

The honorees will be officially recognized during a reception on April 17. The university expects to open the event to the campus community, but registration may be required to attend. Further details will be provided at a later date.
