Virginia Tech has started Gobbler Gears, an innovative cycling program set to transform the way students navigate the campus. This initiative, introduced by Virginia Tech Sustainable Transportation, aims to provide students with an accessible, affordable, and environmentally friendly mode of travel through the convenience of cycling.

Gobbler Gears offers a full-service cycling experience, providing high-quality bicycles available for rent on a semester basis. With a fleet of seven- or eight-speed hybrid models, equipped with front and rear lights, these bicycles ensure both reliability and safety for students. Nick Quint, transportation network manager, said, "We're thrilled to launch Gobbler Gears and offer Hokies an opportunity to embrace sustainable commuting. This initiative aligns with our commitment to environmental responsibility and aims to make cycling an integral part of campus life."

The program's process is streamlined yet comprehensive. Interested students can request a bicycle through an online rental application during designated sales periods. However, availability is on a first-come, first-served basis, ensuring fairness among applicants. Upon confirmation of a bicycle in their size, students are notified by Sustainable Transportation. They're then required to pay a rental fee, complete the Heads Up Hokies course focusing on safe cycling practices, and schedule a pickup time.

Safety remains a top priority through monthly checks performed at the Hokie Bike Hub, guaranteeing the bikes are in top condition throughout the rental period. Participants will receive a keyed U-lock and a top-rated helmet courtesy of the Gregory Weiner Foundation. The helmet becomes the participant's property after the rental period ends.

"Our aim is not only to provide bikes but also to ensure a smooth, safe, and enjoyable cycling experience for all participants," Quint said. "The free repairs offered by the Hokie Bike Hub and the meticulous sizing of bicycles aim to make this program accessible and convenient for every student."

The bikes are distributed and collected at the Hokie Bike Hub on Level 1 of the Perry Street Parking Garage. Participants are contacted via email before the beginning of their rental semester with details about the pick-up process.

Virginia Tech's Gobbler Gears not only promotes eco-conscious commuting, but also encourages a healthy and active lifestyle among students.
