Things to know in 2024
As we begin the new year, here are 24 things to watch for in 2024.
- The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute and the university’s Innovation and Partnerships Office will display their advanced transportation safety research at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Jan. 9-12.
- Virginia Tech is making changes to its Google and Microsoft services. All students, employees, and alumni are encouraged to follow the guidelines posted to this website.
- Students in the College of Natural Resources and Environment will spend the winter break traveling to Antarctica and will share a log of their experiences on the bottom of the world.
- The Office for Inclusion and Diversity and Student Affairs will host a series of events to mark the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, Jan. 15-19.
- Spring semester classes start Jan. 16. Classes will end May 1 with final exams beginning on May 3.
- The Maury Strauss Distinguished Public Lecture Series at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC will resume on Jan. 25 with a lecture on long COVID by Ziyad Al-Aly, assistant professor of medicine, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, director, Clinical Epidemiology Center, chief of research and education, Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care System, St. Louis.
- President Tim Sands will give his State of the University address on Feb. 7.
- Hokies on Wall Street, hosted by the Pamplin College of Business, will be held at Invesco in New York City on April 4.
- The College of Engineering will welcome four new department heads in electrical and computer engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, and biomedical engineering and mechanics.
- Virginia Tech will be partnering with the U.S. Department of State and the government of Botswana to establish a wildlife forensics center in southern Africa, which will help combat the illegal trade of animal products.
- The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will welcome a new dean in the fall. Alan Grant announced his retirement after 15 years of leading the college.
- Similarly, the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will search for a new commandant. Maj. Gen. Randal Fullhart announced his retirement after 13 years of leadership.
- Virginia Tech will start Giving Day 2024 at noon ET Feb. 21.
- Construction on Mitchell Hall – a five-story facility that will support the College of Engineering’s enrollment growth and its 21st century experiential learning and research mission – will begin in the spring with the initial demolition of Randolph Hall.
- Graduating students at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine will join their medical school peers around the country to mark Match Day on March 15.
- The Pamplin College of Business will hold its Engagement Summit on April 18-19.
- Subscriptions for the Moss Arts Center’s 2024-25 season go on sale May 2.
- Spring commencement ceremonies will begin May 4 with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine ceremony and conclude May 12. The university commencement ceremony will be held in Lane Stadium on May 10 at 8:30 a.m.
- Events for Alumni Weekend will be held June 6-9.
- Hitt Hall will open in the fall and will house the Myers-Lawson School of Construction as well as dining and academic spaces.
- Many capital construction projects are anticipated for completion including Hitt Hall, War Memorial Hall, Innovation Campus Academic Building One, Undergraduate Science Laboratory Building, Virginia Tech Football locker room, a pair of elevator towers and an American with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant pathway in the North Academic District, and the Town of Blacksburg managed Multi-Modal Transit Facility.
- The Class of 2024 named Barbara J. Pendergrass Ed.D. ’87, the first Black dean of students at Virginia Tech, as class ring namesake, and Brandy Faulkner, the Gloria D. Smith Professor of Black Studies, was named class sponsor.
- The Institute for Leadership in Technology culminates in an executive leadership certificate, will feature virtual modules, independent writing, a winter immersion trip, and a spring convocation on Virginia Tech’s campuses in Northern Virginia.
- Fall commencement ceremonies will be held Dec. 20.
