Lingjia Liu, professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of Wireless@Virginia Tech in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been named a Bradley Senior Faculty Fellow by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The Bradley Senior Faculty Fellowship recognizes faculty research excellence. Liu will retain the fellowship for a period of five years.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 2017, Liu’s scholarship focuses on 6G networks, machine learning for wireless, Open RAN, and dynamic spectrum access/sharing. He has received more than 50 funded research projects as principal investigator or co-principal investigator totaling more than $125 million. His funding has come from both government and industry sources, including the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Air Force Research Laboratory, Army Research Office, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, National Spectrum Consortium, and National Science Foundation as well as Qualcomm, Intel, and Samsung.

He has received over 20 U.S. patents and has authored or co-authored three book chapters, more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, and more than 100 conference or workshop papers. His scholarship has been recognized with eight best paper awards, and his work is frequently cited by his peers. Liu has presented more than 40 invited talks, lectures, seminars, or keynotes around the world.

Liu has chaired many international Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) conferences, symposiums, and workshops, including seven consecutive IEEE GLOBECOM Workshops on Emerging Technologies for 5G. He served as vice chair for the Americas of the IEEE Technical Committee on Green Communications and Computing from 2017-19 and has served on more than 50 technical committees on various IEEE and ACM conferences. Liu has served on editorial boards of various flagship journals in his field such as IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Transactions on Communications, and IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, and he is a guest editor for the special issue on “3GPP Technologies: 5G-Advanced and Beyond” for the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications. Currently, he is an elected member of the National Spectrum Consortium Executive Committee.

As the director of Wireless@Virginia Tech, Liu oversees a center of more than 30 faculty to focus on research and development in wireless communication and networking. He received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research from the College of Engineering in 2021. In spring 2022, Liu was named one of 12 faculty members to be formally affiliated with the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus in Alexandria.

As an advisor and mentor of graduate students, Liu has advised 10 master’s degree thesis students to completion and 13 Ph.D. students. He currently advises 14 Ph.D. students.

Liu received his bachelor's degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China and his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University.
