Chen-Ching Liu, a professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named a foreign fellow of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE).

Liu is the American Electric Power Professor and director of Virginia Tech’s Power and Energy Center. He is internationally recognized for his pioneering research in intelligent system methodologies for power systems and was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 2020. Liu is currently working on new technologies as part of a $3 million U.S. Department of Energy grant to improve electrical substation cybersecurity.

Fellow is CSEE's highest professional distinction. The award honors those who have made extraordinary accomplishments in the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology or practice in power engineering or have made outstanding contributions to the progress of society and the organization and development of CSEE.

The recently announced cohort of foreign fellows includes Liu along with eight other researchers from around the world. Since 2018, the society has elected a total of 39 foreign fellows. Liu joins the ranks of foreign fellow alongside the electrical and computer engineering department’s Saifur Rahman, who is currently serving as president of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

“Since joining the department in 2018, Chen-Ching’s work at the Power and Energy Center has propelled Virginia Tech’s reputation in power systems forward immensely,” said department head Luke Lester. “His selection as a CSEE foreign fellow demonstrates his commitment to international collaborations that benefit not only the department, but society as a whole."
