Virginia Tech receives Insight Into Diversity 2022 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award
Virginia Tech’s Office for Inclusion and Diversity received the 2022 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.
As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — Virginia Tech will be featured, along with other institutions, in the November issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. This is the seventh consecutive year Virginia Tech has been named as a HEED Award recipient and also has been selected to receive the additional honor of being named an INSIGHT Into Diversity “Diversity Champion,” scoring in the very top tier of all 2022 HEED Award institutions.
“Inclusion and diversity are integral parts of our strategic vision,” said Virginia Tech President Tim Sands. “The HEED recognition reflects our universitywide commitment to engage diverse ideas, people, and cultures as part of a rich educational experience that helps Hokies develop the empathy and skills they need to lead and succeed after graduation."
“We are honored to be selected as a Diversity Champion for the seventh straight year” said Menah Pratt, vice president for diversity, inclusion, and strategic affairs. “We are focused on promoting lasting transformation and creating a more just and inclusive world, starting right here at Virginia Tech. This national recognition affirms our continued efforts to InclusiveVT, our institutional and individual commitment to Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence.”
“The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees — and best practices for both — leadership support for diversity, campus culture and climate, supplier diversity, and many other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus.”
