Returning to campus, inclement weather warning for the weekend of Jan. 15-16

From: Student Affairs

Due to reports of a significant winter storm event for the Blacksburg and Roanoke areas for Jan. 15-16, 2022, Student Affairs has made important changes to several student services in the interest of our student’s safety over the move-in weekend.

Housing: Sunday move-in highly discouraged and critical testing updates

Due to the inclement weather expected, Housing and Residence Life strongly suggests that students adjust their travel and arrival plans to avoid arriving to campus on Sunday. University facilities staff and resident advisor staff will be working to keep sidewalks and entryways clear; however, the residential focus will be on main doorways into the facilities depending in scope of the weather event.

Also, as a critical reminder, testing is required for move-in. Every student’s Hokie Passport access to their building and room is currently turned off. Residential staff will turn on a student’s access after they have reviewed their testing documents in the StarRez Portal. Test reviews are being processed as quickly as possible to reduce delays and same-day approvals for test received during business hours are usually completed within an hour.

If a student arrives to campus without a reviewed and approved test, they will be required to either load their test results, take a rapid antigen test (supplies limited), or find an off-campus accommodation until their test materials are available and approved.

REMINDER: The testing report window has been expanded due to the anticipated snowstorm.  If a student has submitted their COVID-19 negative test on Jan. 12 or later, it will be honored through Tuesday, Jan. 18. This change extends the 72-hour requirement and enables more flexibility with travel plans.

For more critical updates about spring 2022 move-in and testing requirements, visit the Housing Notices page.

Parking and bus routes impacts

On Friday, Jan. 14, and Saturday, Jan. 15, the following parking lots are designated for 30-minute move-in spaces to assist students and their families moving into campus. Due to the snow, snow removal activities and to ensure the safety of the university community, traversing to, from, and around campus on Sunday, Jan. 16 should be avoided.

After move-in, residential students should park in the resident sections of the Stadium Lot, Chicken Hill Lot, and the Duck Pond Drive Lot. All F/S and C/G lots on campus will be closed until the snow has been cleared. Do not park in F/S or C/G lots on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday until the lots are clear.

Also, due to the forecasted winter storm, busing routes may be impacted by the snow. Students can find the latest Blacksburg Transit (BT) updates and any status impacts by visiting the BT website.

Dining Services, Squires, and McComas (Recreational Sports) Hours of Operations

Should the snowfall be significant, students are encouraged to visit our Dining Center Operations website for the latest updates and impacts or disruptions in service.

As of current, Squires Student Center will also be open on Sunday and Monday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Break Zone in Squires Hall will be open from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.

McComas will also be closed on Saturday, but will be open for the weekend with operational hours on Sunday from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Monday 10 a.m. – 11 p.m.  These hours could be subject to change based on weather.

Sorority recruitment to go virtual on Sunday

Panhellenic Bid Day on Sunday, Jan. 16, it will take place virtually. Chapters and new members are encouraged to celebrate virtually after recruitment is over on Sunday.

From: Virginia Tech Transportation Services; Division of Campus Planning, Infrastructure, and Facilities

The National Weather Service is currently forecasting the possibility of a winter weather event for the Blacksburg and Roanoke areas for Jan. 15-16, 2022.

In anticipation of potential wintry weather, Virginia Tech has put snow emergency routes on the Blacksburg campus in effect starting at noon on Saturday, Jan. 15.

This designation goes into effect prior to road conditions deteriorating to support snow removal and emergency vehicle movement.

Parking and bus route impacts

When a Snow Route Emergency is declared, certain roads on campus must remain open for emergency vehicle use. All vehicles parked along five roads (parallel and diagonal) must be removed or they will be towed at the owner's expense beginning at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15.

  • Washington Street: Between Kent Street and Duck Pond Drive.
  • Kent Street: Between Washington Street and Drillfield Drive.
  • South Drillfield Drive: Between Kent Street and West Campus Drive (both sides of the road).
  • Beamer Way: Between Washington Street and Southgate Drive.
  • Alumni Mall: Inbound lane only (the outbound lane will remain unaffected).

Resident students should park in the resident sections of the Stadium Lot, Chicken Hill Lot, and the Duck Pond Drive Lot. All F/S and C/G lots on campus will be closed until the snow has been cleared. Do not park in F/S or C/G lots on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday until the lots are clear.

Move-in parking and associated impacts with the snow

On Friday, Jan. 14 and Saturday, Jan. 15, the following parking lots are designated for 30-minute move-in spaces to assist students and their families moving into campus. Due to the snow, snow removal activities and to ensure the safety of the university community, traversing to, from, and around campus on Sunday, Jan. 16 should be avoided.

  • Ag Quad Lot (behind Hutcheson Hall)
  • Dietrick Hall Lot
  • Drillfeld Drive (War Memorial Gym side)
  • Engel Hall Lot
  • Kent Street (after 8 p.m. on Jan. 15, parking along Kent Street will be prohibited due to the snow route)

  • Coliseum Lot (after 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 15 this lot will be closed to accommodate basketball parking)

Special permits will not be needed in the 30-minute move-in spaces.

Spring 2022 move-in inclement weather planning

Posted: Jan. 12, 2022

From Student Affairs:

We are aware of the possibility of a significant winter storm over the upcoming weekend and know that this may interfere with your return to the Virginia Tech residence halls. In response to this, we are announcing an update to our COVID-19 testing policy. If you have submitted your COVID-19 negative test on Jan. 12 or later, it will be honored through Monday, Jan. 17. This change extends the 72-hour requirement and enables more flexibility with travel plans.

Students and families can also consider moving in before or after the storm. Returning students can arrive as early as Friday, Jan. 14 at noon. Students are also welcome to move in on Monday, Jan. 17, but should keep in mind that most university offices are closed for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Please check weather and road conditions prior to traveling back to Blacksburg and plan accordingly.

Check the Virginia Tech website and university status page frequently as relevant weather impacts, road closures, and other information will be communicated there and across university social media channels.
