Moss Arts Center announces spring performances
The Moss Arts Center offers a spring lineup of events filled with diverse, powerful, and inspiring perspectives, from international singing sensations and dynamic music ensembles to family-friendly favorites and a Broadway blockbuster.

Moss Arts Center spring performances
Thursday, Jan. 20, 7:30 p.m.
Four-time Grammy winner Angélique Kidjo is a world music superstar who blends the West African traditions of her childhood with R&B, funk, and jazz. Kidjo’s Moss debut draws from recent hits and classic, danceable favorites.
Friday, Jan. 28, 7:30 p.m.
Classical music sounds new when played by the Grammy-nominated Danish String Quartet. Following a widely popular appearance in the center’s online “HomeStage” series, the ensemble’s in-person Moss debut includes Purcell and Schumann quartets and folk music from the British Isles.
“Birdhouse Factory”

Theatrical troupe Cirque Mechanics makes a return trip to the Moss with “Birdhouse Factory.” With unicyclists, trapeze artists, and a trampoline wall that defies the laws of physics, these top circus artists are a family favorite.

Ballet Hispánico helped open the Moss Arts Center eight years ago and now the company returns to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Full of spirit and vibrancy, the evening performance encompasses five decades of lush and virtuosic dance.
The 25th Anniversary “Farewell Season of Love” Tour

For a quarter of a century, “RENT” has inspired audiences to choose love over fear and to live without regret. This Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning phenomenon has become more than a musical—it’s a cultural touchstone and a source of joy and strength for millions.

Jookin’ is the incredibly fluid street dance brought to world’s attention by Lil Buck, who became a YouTube sensation when he improvised with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Joined by eight dancers and a live DJ, he chronicles the dance form—and evokes the energy of the streets.

NPR favorite “The Moth” brings the power of storytelling to millions of people each year. At Moth Mainstage a curated roster of best tellers share their stories. Each story is true and every voice authentic, creating a funny, moving, intimate, and enlightening experience.
Thursday, March 24, 7:30 p.m.
From Bogotá, Colombia comes Chontadelia, a funky, seven-piece band that mixes marimba, Afro-Colombian culture, and electro beats. Chontadelia’s outspoken, electric funk also gives voice to its communities’ histories, stories, struggles, and concerns.
Edgar Meyer and the Scottish Ensemble
Thursday, March 31, 7:30 p.m.
Grammy-winner, bassist, and Moss favorite Edgar Meyer returns to the center for the third time. For this performance, he is joined by the vibrant and engaging Scottish Ensemble. The concert includes classical works by Bach and Elgar, and new composition by Meyer written especially for this tour.

Cube
After someone threw a burger at them and shouted a transphobic slur, British performer Travis Alabanza became obsessed with burgers. This solo play is the climax of their obsession. Alabanza serves up a show that is funny, timely, and powerful.
“For the Girls”

Spend an evening with an icon. Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth brings her powerhouse voice to a series of legendary songs. “For the Girls” is her tribute to music’s great female performers who have influenced this accomplished star of stage and screen.

One of the most sought-after violinists playing today, Sarah Chang impresses audiences with her technical virtuosity and refined emotional depth. Joined by pianist Sonya Ovrutsky Fensome, her Moss debut includes magnificent violin sonatas by Brahms and Franck, as well as Bartók’s “Romanian Folk Dances.”

In a free nightly installation over three weeks, the faces of three unsung New River Valley community members are projected onto trees on the Virginia Tech Drillfield. “Monuments” demonstrates the profound importance of local heroes.
Saturday, April 23, 7:30 p.m.
Internet sensation Choir! Choir! Choir! mixes equal parts singing, comedy, and community-building. For this free event, there are no auditions and the audience is the choir. The audience shows up, learns an original arrangement to a popular song, sings beautifully together, and goes home feeling great.
Thursday, April 28, 7:30 p.m.
British vocal early music ensemble the Tallis Scholars performs a Moss-commissioned work by American composer David Lang that responds to Renaissance composer Antoine Brumel’s monumental “Earthquake” Mass. The old and new works will be sung side by side in one remarkable evening.
Purchase subscriptions
Subscriptions offer discounted prices and priority seat selection. Two subscription levels, Premier and Silver, are available for spring performances. The Premier Subscription includes 11 shows at a 25% discount with the option to add on “BURGERZ” by Travis Alabanza at a 25% discount. The Silver Subscription offers a 15 percent discount off ticket prices with a minimum purchase of three performances.
Subscriptions can be purchased online; at the Moss Arts Center box office, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday; or by calling 540-231-5300 during box office hours. Currently, only subscription packages are available for purchase. Tickets for individual performances will be available for purchase on Nov. 9, 2021.
“RENT” is not included in subscription packages and is not eligible for a discount, however, if you purchase a subscription package, you will be able to add tickets to your purchase before they go on sale Nov. 9, 2021.
