Timothy Miles named youth protection associate specialist

Timothy Miles was named Virginia Tech youth protection associate specialist effective Oct. 12, 2020.
Under Miles’ leadership, the newly created Virginia Tech Youth Protection Office will support efforts across the university to safeguard the wellbeing and to provide the best experience possible for children participating in programs conducted or hosted by the university.
Miles will partner with faculty and staff to ensure appropriate registration, training, supervision plans, and program staff screening are in place when engaging minors.
Additionally, Miles will provide leadership for designing and delivering appropriate training and associated guidelines and procedures. Miles will have dual reporting lines to Cathy Sutphin, associate director for youth, families, and health with Virginia Cooperative Extension, and to Kevin Foust, associate vice president for safety and security.
Miles has an extensive background in education, including as a teacher for 13 years and as an assistant principal at Floyd County High School for three years. He also brings experience with law enforcement, having served as a police officer for 10 years, with six of those as a school resource officer.
Miles earned his educational specialist degree from Virginia Tech, his Master of Education degree from Radford University, and his Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from Radford University.

The role will utilize all of Miles’ experience in education and law enforcement as he provides leadership to youth guidelines and practices and ensures accurate registration of programs for minors.
“As a land-grant university, many of our faculty and staff engage youth,” Sutphin said. “Tim’s leadership will support our commitment to providing a welcoming, safe environment for children experiencing Virginia Tech.”
