Campus safety walk planned to identify safety, security improvements
In an effort to enhance safety and security on the Virginia Tech campus, students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate in a nighttime safety walk across campus on Oct. 7. The walk will begin at 7 p.m. on the front steps of Burruss Hall and is expected to last no more than two hours.
Driven by student interest, the recurring event, which last took place in January of this year, will be orchestrated through a joint effort among the Facilities Department, Virginia Tech Police Department, Parking and Transportation, and Environmental Health and Safety.
Participants will walk along a route that includes the Duck Pond, the Overflow Lot, Oak Lane, Burchard Plaza, and Burruss Hall – in the dark. During the walk, attendees will be asked to identify specific locations where lighting, landscaping, and other maintenance issues could be improved.
The nighttime setting offers a different vantage into potential maintenance and safety issues that may reveal themselves only in the dark. Feedback and recommendations collected from the walk will be used to guide upcoming facilities projects and Virginia Tech Police Department initiatives.
All members of the university community are invited to attend. The RSVP link can be found here.
