The VetTRAC program at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine welcomed to campus two cohorts of 19 undergraduate students from underrepresented populations.

An initiative of InclusiveVT — Virginia Tech’s commitment to its motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence — the weeklong enrichment program provides aspiring veterinary students with opportunities to explore veterinary medicine and its potential career paths. Participants reside in a campus residence hall, eat dinner in a university dining hall, and experience life as a Virginia Tech student. The program is now in its fifth year.

Lectures, tours, interactive presentations, and hands-on learning experiences — from intubating a model dog’s head to suturing bananas, practicing canine eye examinations, and milking dairy cows — are presented by the college’s faculty and staff.

Organized by Rebecca Stinson, the college’s associate director of student support and admissions, VetTRAC targets students who may be unable to experience veterinary medicine in its full breadth. Each year, students from racially and socio-economically diverse backgrounds both across the country and around the world apply to participate in the program.
