Bryan Garey named vice president for human resources at Virginia Tech
Bryan Garey, assistant vice president of human resources for talent at the University of Virginia, has been named vice president for human resources at Virginia Tech.
Garey will start his new position at Virginia Tech on Sept. 17, 2018. Lisa Wilkes has served as interim vice president for human resources the past year.
Reporting to Senior Vice President for Operations and Administration Dwayne Pinkney, Garey will lead and implement a transformation of human resources policies, practices, staff, and technologies at Virginia Tech.
“As the university adopts a comprehensive human resources plan developed with stakeholders across campus, Bryan will play an essential role to lead that change across the university,” said Pinkney. “He is a proven successful human resources leader who has an established track record of building high performing teams, facilitating change, and moving human resources organizations forward as an effective partner and faculty/staff resource. I am delighted to welcome him to the Virginia Tech community.”
“As we conducted the search, it became clear to the committee and university leadership that Bryan possessed the right combination of professional experience, success, and vision necessary to help us accomplish the ambitious goals set forth by the university,” said Dwight Shelton, vice president for finance and chair of the search committee. “He will have a lasting impact on Virginia Tech.”
“I could not be more excited about coming to Virginia Tech, given its excellent academic reputation, the dynamic vision of President Tim Sands, experience and stewardship under Dwight Shelton, and the energy and ideas that Dwayne Pinkney has brought in his new role as senior vice president for operations and administration,” said Garey. “Virginia Tech is deeply invested in the role that human resources can play to support the university’s mission and goals, and this university is an example of what is great about public higher education. I am honored to help elevate that mission through progressive, supportive, and strategic human resources practices.”
Garey will bring nearly 25 years of human resources experience — including 15 years in public higher education — to Virginia Tech. He has spent the last 10 years in progressively higher-level management positions at the University of Virginia.
In his most recent role as assistant vice president of human resources for talent, Garey led talent management, talent recruitment, and employee relations teams in support of 20,000 employees across both the university’s academic and health system operations. He also served as assistant vice president and interim academic chief human resources officer. He began his tenure at Virginia in 2008 as director of human resources and was promoted to assistant vice president in 2012.
From 2001 to 2008, Garey held progressively higher human resources positions at the University of Florida, concluding his time there as assistant director for human resources services. He began his professional career at MCI Worldcom from 1993 to 2000.
Certified through The Society of Human Resources Management, Garey received his master’s degree in management from the University of Florida, a master of fine arts degree from the University of Virginia, and a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. He has two daughters, a junior at the University of Virginia and a rising high school senior. His wife, Cady, is a lecturer in drama at the University of Virginia.
The Division of Human Resources at Virginia Tech supports more than 13,000 employees with responsibilities for employee benefits programs, talent acquisition, management and development, and for the effective administration and execution of human resources data and policy management.
