On June 19, girls from several middle schools in Montgomery County, Roanoke City, Floyd County, and other school districts learned about various career paths available through the Division of Operations at Virginia Tech.
After last year's Girls Day led by the Facilities Department, the program was expanded to increase the number of fields that students will experience.
Inspired by “Take Your Daughter to Work Day”, rising eighth-grade girls explored new career options in fields typically dominated by men:
● Transportation, Distribution & Logistics
● Architecture and Construction
● Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
● Health Sciences
● Law Enforcement, Public Safety, Corrections & Security
Students engaged in hands-on activities, tours, and demonstrations related to jobs in these fields, and spoke to women in these fields about their careers.
The goals of the event are to encourage girls to develop a strong basis in the STEM fields and to promote interest in these behind-the-scenes career fields.
According to a 2017 report from the United States Department of Commerce, only 24 percent of careers in STEM field are held by females, despite women holding nearly half of all jobs in the United States. By engaging young women in Southwest Virginia, the division hopes to express the importance and value of female participation in all fields of work.
