Subscriptions will be available at 10 a.m. May 22 for the Moss Arts Center’s 2018-19 season, which will mark the fifth anniversary of the center’s opening with a rich mix of performances, special events, and new ways for the community to connect, learn, and engage.

The center will celebrate this milestone with a season full of performances, exhibitions, and experiences that go beyond the ordinary, spotlighting diverse voices and views, fresh ideas, and global perspectives.  

Always at the foundation of the center’s offerings, this season will feature artists and music from around the world. Of the 27 performances that are part of the center’s 2018-19 regular season, 11 — over 40 percent — feature international artists.

Global sounds let us dig into and expand our cultural awareness. This season brings a fresh take on time-honored melodies with the Beijing ensemble Sounds of China, Latin Grammy-winning Cuban ensemble El Septeto Santiaguero, and Ireland’s leading traditional music group Danú. Legendary masters Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain, and Edgar Meyer join forces to share their talents, which, when combined, touch practically every geographical and stylistic corner of the musical world.

Another musical master, Itzhak Perlman, will certify his title as reigning virtuoso of the violin with a classical recital program. Find more timeless moments that transcend the everyday in performances by the vibrant and adventurous Australian Chamber Orchestra and the 15-member ensemble Les Violons du Roy, who will be joined by star countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo.

This season’s orchestral offerings span time and place to celebrate legendary voices, including the Ambient Orchestra and cellist Maya Beiser, who reimagine David Bowie's final album “Blackstar,” and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra brings its “Bernstein Centennial Celebration Tour” to honor famed composer Leonard Bernstein.

American roots take the stage with a strong lineup of boundary-broadening performances — from the music of Martha Redbone, which embraces folk, country, Piedmont blues, gospel, bluegrass, soul, and traditional American Indian sounds, to the Turtle Island Quartet with special guest Cyrus Chestnut and jazz greats Fred Hersch, Kurt Elling, and Kate McGarry, who will set Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass” to music.

Great theatre comes in many forms and from many places this season. Theatre RE explores what is left when memory is gone in “The Nature of Forgetting,” while the TEAM and the National Theatre of Scotland provide a fierce poetic snapshot of two cultures linked by history with “Anything That Gives Off Light.”

Admire the power of movement with performances by artists who defy physics and give new perspectives on what it means to move. The 2018-19 season opens with American dance titan Paul Taylor in a program that includes live music by Latin Grammy winner Pablo Ziegler. Los Angeles-based choreographer David Roussève brings his newest work reflecting on identity through the life of Billy Strayhorn, while Pilobolus rounds out the dance offerings with an epic and inventive animation and shadow-theatre adventure developed in collaboration with “SpongeBob SquarePants” lead writer Steven Banks.

Fifth anniversary gala performance

Celebrate the Moss Arts Center’s fifth anniversary in grand style with a special gala performance, “Callas in Concert.” The opera world lost a legend with the death of Maria Callas in 1977. Her exquisite voice and performances astounded audiences, and her loss devastated millions of fans, many of whom never had the chance to see her perform live. Using groundbreaking holographic technology, Callas will perform on the Moss Arts Center stage with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. Fully remastered recordings of her most iconic performances of Bellini, Bizet, Verdi, and Puccini will come to life in this extraordinary melding of art and technology.

All performances will be held in the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, located within the Moss Arts Center’s Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall. 

The center will also offer an engaging array of exhibitions throughout the 2018-19 season and community events, including workshops, talks, and related activities. Broadway in Blacksburg

The Moss Arts Center will be adding new events throughout spring and summer 2019, including touring Broadway productions. Season subscribers — at the silver, gold, and premier levels — will have advance access to purchase tickets (prior to public ticket sales) for these events during the 2018-19 season. More information on these additions, including ticket sale dates, will be available soon.

Purchase subscriptions

Subscriptions for the 2018-19 season will be available at 10 a.m. May 22 and offer discounted prices and priority seat selection. There are three ways to subscribe: the Premier Subscription includes all performances at a 30 percent discount off adult ticket prices, the Gold Build Your Own Subscription allows for a 25 percent discount off the price of adult tickets for 15 or more performances, and the Silver Build Your Own Subscription offers a 20 percent discount on five to 14 performances. Student and youth tickets are always $10 per performance, including subscriptions.

Subscriptions can be purchased online; at the Moss Arts Center's box office, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday; or by calling 540-231-5300. Currently, only subscription tickets are available for purchase for the 2018-19 season. Beginning August 7, 2018, tickets for individual performances will be available for purchase.
