Hamdy Mahmoud is named collegiate assistant professor of statistics in College of Science

Hamdy Mahmoud has been named as a collegiate assistant professor in the Department of Statistics, part of the Virginia Tech College of Science.

Mahmoud focuses his research on developing statistical models, especially in semi/nonparametric regression models and applying different types of data, such as epidemiology, spatial, spatially-temporally correlated data, environmental data, and industrial data. He also is interested in other topics in statistics, such as Bayesian statistics, experimental design, time series, longitudinal data analysis, and biostatistics.

He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cairo University in Egypt in 1996 and 2005, respectively, and master’s and doctoral degrees from Virginia Tech in 2010 and 2014, respectively, all in statistics. He previously worked as a visiting assistant professor at Virginia Tech and then an assistant professor at Assiut University in Egypt before returning to Virginia Tech this past December.

During his graduate studies at Virginia Tech, Mahmoud received the Jesse C. Arnold Award for Teaching Excellence for the 2012-13 academic year, and was nominated for graduate teaching instructor of record award in 2014.

Mahmoud is one of 22 faculty members to join the College of Science this academic year.
