Juan Espinoza, assistant vice provost for enrollment management, has been named interim director of undergraduate admissions for Virginia Tech’s Office of Admissions.

Espinoza will replace Mildred Johnson, who resigned as associate vice provost for enrollment management and director of undergraduate admissions, following a career of more than 20 years at Virginia Tech. Espinoza’s appointment was announced by Luisa Havens Gerardo, vice provost for enrollment and degree management.

Espinoza will serve as the interim director for a minimum 18 months, in addition to his regular assistant vice provost role, and will offer functional oversight and strategic direction to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. He will also coordinate the implementation of multiple admission application platforms and associated processes and procedures, as well as new operational optimization strategies.

“I am honored to lead such a strong group of admissions professionals,” said Espinoza. “I look forward to partnering with Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Dr. Havens Gerardo in instituting a series of admissions best practices to ensure we remain a top destination for prospective students. I am also excited to collaborate with key university partners in shaping a freshman class that is a true reflection of the diversity and strength of our commonwealth.”

Espinoza has 13 years of progressively responsible experience in undergraduate admissions and enrollment management, having served as an assistant director, senior assistant director, and associate director of undergraduate admissions. He has also served as inclusion coordinator and director of diversity and access initiatives before serving in his current role as assistant vice provost of enrollment management.

“Juan is a highly respected leader within the commonwealth’s college admissions and recruitment community,” said Gerardo. “I look forward to working alongside Juan in his new role as we continue to develop a strategic vision around enrollment to support Virginia Tech’s ambitious and bright future.”

Since 2013, Espinoza has served as president of the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network, the largest nonprofit in Virginia focused on serving Latinos pursuing higher education and Latino professors, teachers, and other education professionals across the commonwealth.  In 2016, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe appointed Espinoza to the Virginia Latino Advisory Board.

Espinoza holds bachelor of arts degrees in public and urban affairs and political science from Virginia Tech, and a master of science in corporate and professional communication from Radford University.
