The National Academic Advising Association named Kimberly Smith, director of University Studies and Undergraduate Academic Advising, a Region 2 Outstanding Advising Award winner in the Advising Administrator category.
The association’s regional awards recognize individuals who demonstrate qualities and practices that make significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising. Awards are divided by advising roles, including primary advisors, faculty advisors, new advisors, and administrative advisors.
Smith received the award at the association’s Region 2 Conference March 18 in Hyattsville, Maryland. Region 2 represents the Mid-Atlantic area, including Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
“We are thrilled for Kim to receive this award as she serves as a champion for advising at Virginia Tech,” said Karen Eley Sanders, associate vice provost for undergraduate academic affairs and director of student success. “Beyond her commitment to coordinating and advising our University Studies students, Kim advocates for strong and coordinated advising of students across the university, ensuring our students have the best educational path and experience while staying on track for graduation.”
“I am honored to receive this award from the National Academic Advising Association,” said Smith. “Advising students and leading university-wide activities and programs to enhance academic advising at Virginia Tech is my passion, and I’m humbled to be recognized for that work.”
The National Academic Advising Association has more than 11,000 members, representing all 50 U.S. states, as well as Puerto Rico, Canada, and several other international countries. The organization focuses on academic advising in higher education to support the educational development of students.
