Former congressman Jim Moran joins School of Public and International Affairs as professor of practice
The Honorable Jim Moran was recently appointed professor of practice in the School of Public and International Affairs in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech.
The former congressman will guest lecture in various programs within the School of Public and International Affairs; participate in organizations and groups directly related to the school’s work in public policy, international affairs, planning, and public administration; engage full-time professionals interested in executive level education; and inspire and help educate undergraduates in National Capital Region internship programs like the Washington Semester and Hokies on the Hill on federal policy and a life in public service.
Moran will be located at the Old Town Alexandria campus in the National Capital Region and join other distinguished professors of practice including Justin Lewis Abold, Bill Anderson, and Randall Murch.
“This opportunity for students to engage with a recognized expert and dedicated public servant will provide a richer educational experience and is an essential ingredient of a Virginia Tech education,” said President Tim Sands. “We are pleased to have the congressman as part of our community in the National Capital Region through our School of Public and International Affairs program.”
Moran will work with the school and university leadership to convene high-profile round table events and conferences, including at the Virginia Tech Research Center ─ Arlington, said Anne Khademian, professor and director of the School of Public and International Affairs. These events will be designed to advance a policy issue or area that would greatly benefit from Moran’s extensive knowledge and experience in the public service arena.
An example of this is an upcoming event that Moran will moderate, “Drones in America: Regulating Unmanned Aircraft Systems,” on Thursday, May 19, 2016, at 3:30 p.m. at the Russell Senate Office Building, Room 485. Senator Mark Warner will give opening remarks.
"We are honored and delighted to have Congressman Jim Moran join us in the School of Public and International Affairs,” said Khademian. “His accomplished career and outstanding leadership and service to the people of Virginia and the United States are awe-inspiring and set the example for public service leadership at its finest.
“Moving forward he will be instrumental in advancing the important work of the school, engaging challenging public policies, preparing students for creative and effective public service leadership, and pursuing vital research with our partners in Virginia, the U.S., and across the globe," Khademian said.
