Virginia Science Festival at Virginia Tech promises hands-on fun this weekend
The Virginia Science Festival will feature hands-on experiences, live performances, and interactive demonstrations to inspire a wonder in science for all ages. Virginia Tech will be the festival’s host on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Blacksburg event is part of a festival at sites across Virginia between Sept. 26 and Oct. 30, providing opportunity for engagement and exchange among children, teens, families, and scientists.
“We are excited to welcome everyone from the young to the young at heart to this festival because there will be something for everyone,” said Susan Magliaro, director of VT-STEM and professor of education. “Everyone is a scientist at Virginia Tech on Sept. 26.”
Last year’s inaugural festival drew thousands of visitors to campus. This year the free public event is expanding to downtown. More than 80 exhibitors will offer entertaining and educational activities focusing on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
Exhibits will be at the Moss Arts Center and Alumni Mall on the Virginia Tech campus and on Henderson Lawn and College Avenue in downtown Blacksburg.
Exhibits include rocketry, the STEM of firefighting, Lego cargo drops, WDBJ7’s First Alert meteorologists, live animals, 3D printing, fossils, a virus-tracking game, bugs, and more.
Major sponsors include the Institute for Creativity, Arts and Technology (ICAT), WDBJ7, Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, VT-STEM, and The Roanoke Times.
