Vickie Martin lauded for a career of fiscal management expertise
Senior Fiscal Technician Vickie Martin has dedicated her professional career to shaping business policies and procedures at Virginia Tech. Martin has worked at Virginia Tech for more than 40 years.
Before moving into her current position in the Office of Educational Research and Outreach, Martin held a related position in the Department of Education Leadership and Policy Studies.
Her current responsibilities include supporting the administration of the School of Education’s external grants and contracts. In 2005, because of her fiscal expertise and reputation as a creative problem-solver, Martin was selected to create the system for post-award operations that she now administers.
Martin is one of nine Virginia Tech employees nominated in 2015 to represent the university in the statewide Governor’s Award program. She was nominated in the career achievement category.
“Since the inception of the Office of Educational Research and Outreach [in 2005], the grant portfolio of the School of Education has grown from $7 million to more than $15 million. I am certain that Vickie’s efforts in supporting the post-award process have directly impacts this substantial growth in external funding,” said Barbara Lockee, professor and associate director of the School of Education.
“Her integrity, work ethic, and diligence were, and are, unmatched,” said David Alexander, a professor in the School of Education. “Vickie often arrives early to work, stays late, and takes work home when necessary in order to facilitate principal investigators’ responsibilities with external and internal grants or other fiscal issues.”
Martin maintains a keen awareness of ever-changing policies at the university, state, federal, and international level.
“For more than 20 years, Vickie has taught me the ins and outs of fiscal management and supported my work in countless ways, however, those intangible attributes our relationship is built on are what I value the most,” said Patricia Bickley, director of the Department of Education’s Training and Technical Assistance Center. “Trust, reliability, honesty, and integrity are the hallmarks of a most-valued colleague and why Vickie Martin is first on my speed dial,” Bickley added.
Martin has administered funding and has handled accounts on numerous international projects in England and China, some of which lasted for 20 years. Despite the difficulty of dealing with different accounting procedures and conversions, Martin gladly accepted the challenge and used it as a valuable learning experience.
