Virginia Tech announces Earth Week 2015 events
Tree plantings, art, movies, lectures, games, and more will highlight Virginia Tech’s Earth Week 2015 celebration April 19-24.
The week will kick off with a community meal and art auction at Blacksburg United Methodist Church on April 19 at 6:30 p.m.
Each day of Earth Week will feature events focused on a theme: Monday is clean energy, Tuesday is nature and sustainability, Wednesday is food and farms, Thursday is health, and Friday is social justice.
As part of the festivities, the university community is invited to help plant 13 trees near Newman and Vawter halls on April 23 from 1-3 p.m. Tools will be provided and no experience is necessary.
A full schedule of events is available on the Environmental Coalition’s website. The coalition hosts the annual Earth Week celebration with the support of the university’s Office of Energy and Sustainability.
Virginia Tech is committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050, to achieving a minimum Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) rating of silver for all new construction, to reaching a 50 percent recycling rate by 2020, and to improving energy efficiency where and whenever possible in campus buildings.
Dedicated to its motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), Virginia Tech takes a hands-on, engaging approach to education, preparing scholars to be leaders in their fields and communities.
