Cellist Steven Doane to present a program of rarely heard masterworks
Soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, recording artist, and pedagogue Steven Doane will offer a treat for the ears with a program of cello masterworks not often heard. The performance is at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 13, in the Squires Recital Salon and is presented by the Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts.
The recital will include "Five Pieces in Folk Style," Op. 102, by Robert Schumann; Samuel Barber's Cello Sonata, Op. 6; and Benjamin Britten's Third Cello Suite, Op. 87. It also will feature Virginia Tech faculty musicians Tracy Cowden on piano and cellist Alan Weinstein, who will join Doane for Luigi Boccherini's Duo in C Major.
Doane has appeared at festivals and on concert series throughout the United States and overseas. His recordings with pianist Barry Snyder of Gabriel Faure's complete music for cello and piano was awarded the Diapason D'or in France. He received Eastman School of Music’s Eisenhart Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1993 and the Piatigorsky Prize in teaching at the New England Conservatory in 1986.
As a member of the New Arts Trio, Doane was awarded the Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1980. He made his Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center debuts in "Don Quixote" with David Zinman and the Rochester Philharmonic in 1983. His Tully Hall recital debut was in 1990 and has been followed by numerous recital appearances, including programs in London’s Wigmore Hall, Boston’s Saunders Theater, and other venues. He currently holds the title of visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music, London, where he has done several residencies, and he is cello professor at Eastman School of Music.
Doane will also conduct a master class on Tuesday, April 14, in the Squires Recital Salon, which is free of charge and open to the public.
Tickets are performance are $15 general, $10 senior, and $5 student, and may be purchased through the Squires Student Centers and Activities ticket office or by calling 540-231-5615. Tickets will also be available at the box office beginning one hour prior to the performance.
Squires Theatre is located in the Squires Student Center at 290 College Ave. on the campus of Virginia Tech.
