Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic to host career fair Thursday
Two of the region's largest employers are joining forces to hold a career fair this week.
Human resources professionals from Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic will work together from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday to talk with community members about hundreds of open positions in each organization. The fair will be held at Cambria Hotel and Suites, 301 Reserve Ave. SW, in Roanoke.
The fair comes in the wake of announcements from several major employers in recent months about job losses in the area. An estimated 1,500 individuals will be impacted by announcements from Norfolk Southern and the U.S. Postal Service that both organizations would be closing locations in Roanoke.
Virginia Tech, on average, has 250 open positions each day. In addition to teaching and research faculty positions, the university employs professionals in different positions including administrative support, custodial, tradesman, dining services, IT support, graphic design, police officers, nurses, and more.
On average, Carilion Clinic also has about 250 open positions each day. While many positions are for clinical health care providers such as nurses, Carilion has open positions in IT support, patient registration, billing, marketing and many other fields.
During the career fair, participants are invited to participate in the following presentations:
- Creating a Resume, 4:30-4:50 p.m., presented by Christy Lowe, staffing specialist, Virginia Tech;
- Preparing for an Interview, 5-5:20 p.m., presented by Curtis Mabry, director of staffing and recruiting, Virginia Tech;
- Professional Development Opportunities, 5:30-5:50 p.m., presented by Kay Dunkley, director, Virginia Tech Roanoke Center
- Using Social Media in Your Job Search, 6 - 6:20 p.m., presented by Dana Johnson, human resources senior consultant, Carilion Clinic
Dunkley will also be available to talk with attendees about Virginia Tech’s graduate programs and professional development opportunities within the local community.
