Shelli Fowler to take leadership role at summer institute for women
Shelli Fowler, associate professor of English at Virginia Tech and senior director for Networked Pedagogies and Professional Development in Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies, has been asked to serve as associate director and faculty-in-residence for a prestigious women’s leadership program at Bryn Mawr College.
The Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) Bryn Mawr Summer Leadership Institute is committed to creating and sustaining a community of women leaders in academia by focusing on mentorship, gender equity, and inclusion on today’s campuses. Considered one of the premier leadership development organizations for women in higher education, the HERS Institutes are offered at three locations—Wellesley College, University of Denver, and Bryn Mawr College—with two as immersive residential formats.
Fowler participated in the HERS Bryn Mawr Summer Institute in 2013. In her leadership role for the 2015 session, set for July 13-25, she will provide strategic instruction and on-site support.
"I have benefited tremendously from the leadership curriculum and residential immersion experience provided by HERS,” Fowler said. “I look forward to meeting all of the women who will attend HERS in July and to contributing all I can to help make the institute experience as transformative for them as it was for me."
A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 2003 and honored with an Edward S. Diggs Teaching Scholars Award in 2013, Fowler works with both faculty and future faculty to create teaching strategies that foster engaged, lifelong learners in all disciplines. She directs the Networked Learning Initiatives faculty program and the Graduate Education Development Institute, and she has served as an invited faculty member and co-director for the EDUCAUSE Learning Technology Leadership Institute.
Fowler holds a bachelor’s degree from San Jose State University; a master’s degree and a doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin; and a Master of Social Work degree from Radford University. Her research interests include the integration of teaching, learning, and technologies; student engagement and empowerment as active learners; critical pedagogy; African American literature; and diversity and inclusion in higher education.
