Dr. Joseph T. Moskal to head Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
Dr. Joseph T. Moskal, an orthopaedic surgeon who has been affiliated with Carilion Clinic for more than 25 years, will chair the newly formed Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
“Dr. Moskal has an international reputation as a superior orthopaedic surgeon, educator, mentor, and visionary,” said Dr. Cynda Johnson, dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. “Our faculty, staff, and students can all take pride in having someone of his exceptional caliber lead our newest department.”
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Moskal graduated with a bachelor’s degree from State University of New York at Binghamton. After earning a Doctor of Medicine degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, he completed a residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center and a fellowship in adult reconstructive and total joint replacement at Cleveland Clinic, followed by an orthopaedic traumatology fellowship at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System in Baltimore.
Moskal joined the medical staff of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in 1988. In 2009, he became the first orthopaedic surgeon in the Roanoke area to use a new technique for hip replacement surgery that offered patients less pain and a quicker recovery. He and his colleagues have since performed more than a thousand hip replacements using this anterior approach.
Moskal was named chief of orthopaedics for Carilion Clinic in 2010 and has been instrumental in expanding orthopaedic services. The school’s new department is affiliated with the newly formed Carilion Clinic Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, of which he is also chair. The group already has more than 30 faculty appointments.
A highly respected educator, Moskal has been an instructor for national orthopaedic courses or a guest speaker on more than a thousand occasions. He is well published in professional journals and is an active exhibitor at national meetings.
Last May, Moskal received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Virginia Orthopaedic Society.
